Climate Yongshen — The Secret of Qiong Tong Bao Jian
Climate yongshen adjusts the chart's temperature — winter needs warmth, summer needs cooling — and often overrides strength analysis.
What Climate Means
"调候" — literally "harmonize the climate" — every chart has an inborn climate fixed by birth month: hot, cold, dry, damp.
- Winter-born (亥子丑 month): chart leans cold, needs fire to warm
- Summer-born (巳午未): chart leans hot, needs water to cool
- Spring-dry-soil (辰): leans dry, needs water
- Autumn-cool (戌): leans dry, needs moistening
Climate yongshen often takes priority over support-restrain yongshen. "Climate not met, wealth and fame still incomplete" — Qiong Tong Bao Jian.
Qiong Tong Bao Jian — The Climate Classic
The Qing-dynasty 《穷通宝鉴》 by 余春台 is the canonical climate manual. It enumerates 10 day stems × 12 months = 120 climate yongshen entries — a desk reference for every master.
Examples:
- 甲 wood in 子 (winter): climate yongshen 丁 (warmth) + 庚 (axe to shape)
- 丙 fire in 午 (summer): climate yongshen 壬 (rescue) + 庚 (feeds water)
- 戊 earth in 寅 (spring): climate yongshen 丙 (warm) + 甲 (loosen) + 癸 (moisten)
So the same Day Master in different birth months has dramatically different climate needs.
Climate vs Strong/Weak — Which First?
- Extreme climate: climate first. A 丙 in 子 (peak cold) or a 壬 in 午 (peak dry) — even if weak, take fire/water first for climate, not 印 to support self
- Moderate climate: strong/weak primary. When climate yongshen is already transparent or not strictly needed, use standard support-restrain
So climate and support are layered — not either/or. Climate is the precondition; support adjusts within.
Climate Yongshen Best Transparent
Climate yongshen ideally appears in a heavenly stem ("transparent"):
- Transparent → climate is met, life flows
- Hidden only → climate awaits dayun to "fill in"
- Absent → climate unmet, chart fundamentally incomplete (Qiong Tong Bao Jian strict reading)
So in reading: check month climate → find climate yongshen → see if transparent — then proceed.
Climate in Daily Life
Climate yongshen has practical use beyond chart reading:
- Cold-leaning chart: prefer warm climates, warm colors, warm/cooked foods
- Dry-leaning chart: prefer water-adjacent living, humidifiers, lighter foods
- Damp-leaning chart: prefer sunny locations, dry environments, warmer foods
Knowing your chart's climate helps everyday harmonization with structural basis.
