The Ten Heavenly Stems — The Chart's Principal Energies

Ten heavenly stems mapped to Five Elements and Yin-Yang — far more than labels; they are the principal energies of the chart.

What Heavenly Stems Are

The ten Heavenly Stems — descending from heaven, ancient writings say — are ten pure energies placed in the heavenly position of each chart pillar. They are: 甲 Jiǎ, 乙 Yǐ, 丙 Bǐng, 丁 Dīng, 戊 Wù, 己 Jǐ, 庚 Gēng, 辛 Xīn, 壬 Rén, 癸 Guǐ.

Each carries a dual identity: Yin/Yang polarity AND Five Element.

  • 甲 Yang Wood, 乙 Yin Wood
  • 丙 Yang Fire, 丁 Yin Fire
  • 戊 Yang Earth, 己 Yin Earth
  • 庚 Yang Metal, 辛 Yin Metal
  • 壬 Yang Water, 癸 Yin Water

Yin and Yang Are Not Better or Worse

A common misconception: yang stems are 'strong', yin stems 'weak'. Not so. Yang 甲 wood stands like a great pillar — upright, visible, unyielding. Yin 乙 wood weaves like a vine — flexible, indirect, resilient. Different strengths for different tasks.

If your Day Master is 乙 wood, your nature is like the vine — adaptable, intuitive, surviving by bending. If 甲, you are direct, principled, hard to bend.

Each Stem Has an Image

Classical literature uses imagery to make the ten stems memorable and to aid interpretation:

  • Pillar tree / mature timber
  • Vines / flowers / bamboo
  • Sun / blazing fire
  • Candle / refined flame
  • Mountain / dam wall
  • Cultivated field / garden soil
  • Iron / blade
  • Jewel / refined metal
  • River / great ocean
  • Rain / dew / mist

Imagery is not destiny — it's a hand-hold for understanding the temperament of the chart.

Never Read a Stem in Isolation

The art is not 'I am Jia Wood' as a single label, but how that 甲 interacts with the other seven characters around it — generation, control, climate, and the season of birth.

A 甲 born in spring (寅卯 month) is in season — but if too much 庚辛 metal sits in the chart, the wood is over-cut. Strength comes from configuration, not from any one character alone.

Read on about the Twelve Earthly Branches — then return here to see how the stems rest upon them.

An important reminder: This is single-character imagery — it must be read against the whole chart, never relied upon as a single-stem verdict. A person's chart is the integrated interplay of all ten characters (year, month, day, hour stems and branches); the single day stem is only an entry-point coordinate.
