Multi-Pattern — One Chart, Multiple Structures

A single chart can hold multiple patterns simultaneously — primary and secondary coexist, interact, and must be read together.

Multiple Patterns Are Normal

Many beginners think one chart has only one pattern. Not so. Charts are often complex — the month branch's hidden stems can have multiple transparent, each spawning a candidate pattern.

Example: Day Master 壬 water, month branch 午. 午 contains 丁, 己.

  • If 丁 is transparent (壬's direct wealth) → "Direct Wealth Pattern"
  • If 己 is also transparent (壬's direct officer) → "Direct Officer Pattern"
  • Both stand together — "Wealth-Officer Co-Present"

Reading must consider both, and their interaction.

Primary, Secondary, Tertiary Patterns

Multiple patterns have strength ranking:

  • Primary pattern (本气格): primary hidden stem transparent — strongest, chart's center
  • Secondary pattern (中气格): mid hidden stem transparent — supporting, chart's complement
  • Tertiary pattern (余气格): residual hidden stem transparent — weakest, chart's color

In reading, the primary sets the key; secondary adds nuance — they echo or conflict, giving the chart depth.

Four Common Pattern Interactions

1. Wealth-Officer Mutual Generation (Auspicious)

  • Wealth pattern + Officer pattern coexist
  • Wealth feeds officer, officer protects wealth — mutual completion
  • Classical: "Wealth-Officer Twin Beauty" upper-tier
  • Signifies: wealth and status combined, distinguished career

2. Killer-Resource Mutual Generation (Auspicious)

  • Seven Killings pattern + Resource pattern coexist
  • Resource transforms killer to nourish self — risk transmuted to power
  • Classical: "Commander Archetype", great pattern
  • Signifies: ability to carry great responsibility, turning crisis to advantage

3. Mixed Officer-Killer (Caution)

  • Direct Officer + Seven Killings coexist
  • Classical: "Husband not focused" (women), "Career direction mixed" (men)
  • Requires "remove officer keep killer" OR "remove killer keep officer" via union or clash
  • Often shows relationship variability, career-direction wavering

4. Output Overflow (Observe)

  • Eating God + Hurting Officer both present
  • Talent abundance
  • BUT if Direct Officer also present → "Hurting-Officer-Meets-Officer" concern
  • Signifies: innovation strong, stability less

Interactions and Dayun

When multiple patterns coexist, dayun fortune is more complex — not just primary pattern, but how dayun changes the pattern interaction:

  • Dayun shifting "officer-killer mixed" → "clear officer alone" → great fortune
  • Dayun shifting "wealth-officer generation" → "wealth controls resource" → unfavourable
  • Dayun introducing officer to "output overflow" → "hurting-officer-meets-officer" year

So advanced reading often turns on "dayun × multi-pattern" analysis.

How Minglitang Handles This

Minglitang's chart tool automatically identifies all candidate patterns — and annotates their interactions.

For typical charts, the primary pattern is the reading's backbone, with secondary as complement. But if two patterns are equally strong (like co-equal wealth + officer), both lines are read for a richer interpretation.
