A Worked-Example Chart Reading: From Charting to Reflection
This article walks through a complete chart reading using an entirely fictional case (any resemblance is coincidence). The aim is to show what a responsible BaZi consultation should include — and how it should close.
1. Client Background (Fictional Case)
Pseudonym: Sarah Chen Born: 26 August 1984, Sydney, 3:22 PM Gender: female Current age: 41 (2026) Current situation: migrated to Australia 18 years ago (2008 with family); mid-level management at a Sydney financial institution; married 10 years, no children; parents still in Shanghai; recently feeling career plateau, declining maternal health, and 'not knowing where to go next'.
2. Step 1: Time Adjustment
Reported time: 1984-08-26 15:22 AEST (Sydney local). 1984 August in Sydney: post-AEDT period, AEST = UTC+10. Sydney longitude: ~151.21°E. Longitude time correction: (151.21 - 150) × 4 minutes = +4.84 minutes. Equation of Time: 15 August ≈ −4 minutes. Adjusted true solar time: ~15:22 + 5 − 4 ≈ 15:23. → Still within the Monkey hour (申时, 15:00–17:00 true solar time).
Solar-term context: 1984-08-26 is ~one week after Liqiu (立秋) — early Monkey month (申月, lunar 7th month).
3. Step 2: Four-Pillar Charting
Based on true solar time and solar terms:
| Pillar | Stem-Branch | Ten God (vs day stem) | Hidden Stems |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year | 甲子 | Eating God + Indirect Wealth | 子 hides 癸 (Indirect Resource) |
| Month | 壬申 | Companion + Companion | 申 hides 庚壬戊 (Resource·Companion·Killings) |
| Day | 壬辰 | Self + Seven Killings | 辰 hides 戊乙癸 (Killings·Hurting Officer·Rob Wealth) |
| Hour | 戊申 | Seven Killings + Companion | 申 hides 庚壬戊 |
Day Master: Ren water (yang water). Gender: female.
4. Step 3: Day Master Strength
Using our platform's 'Twelve Life-Stages + Five States' algorithm:
- In season: Ren water born in Monkey month — Monkey hides Ren, long-life position → strong.
- Rooted: day branch Chen hides Gui (Rob Wealth root) → rooted.
- Supported: month stem Ren (Companion), hour branch Monkey (long-life of Ren) → well supported.
- Generated: Monkey's hidden Geng generates water → strong generation.
Verdict: Day Master Ren water is moderately strong (not extremely, due to year stem Jia leaking and Chen's Wu earth restraining).
5. Step 4: Favourable Element (Four-Layer Synthesis)
Using our platform's classical four-layer favourable hierarchy:
- Support-Restrain: Day Master moderately strong, prefer restraining — primary Wu earth (Killings, restrains water); secondary Jia wood (Eating God, leaks water).
- Climate-Balancing: Ren water in Monkey month (early autumn) — climate not extreme; secondary reference only.
Note on climate-balancing: per Qiongtong Baojian, the favourable for Ren water in Monkey month is Wu + Ding; this chart has Wu already transparent at the hour stem but Ding not transparent — so climate-balancing at this layer is met through the support-restrain Wu, no separate addition required.
- Illness-Remedy: the chart's 'illness' is excess water and over-strong metal-water generation; the 'remedy' is precisely Wu earth restraining water and Jia wood loosening earth and leaking water.
- Bridge: year stem Jia and month stem Ren form a 'water generates wood' channel; hour stem Wu and month stem Ren form 'earth controls water' tension — needs Bing fire as bridge — but the chart lacks fire.
Synthesised favourable: Wu earth primary, Jia wood secondary, fire as needed but absent. Unfavourable: excess Geng metal, excess Ren/Gui water.
6. Step 5: Pattern Determination
By Ziping Zhenquan method:
- Month branch Monkey reveals Ren (Companion transparent) and Wu (Killings transparent at hour stem).
- Seven Killings is restrained (year stem Jia Eating God can restrain Killings).
- The pattern is Seven Killings + Eating God Restraining Killings.
- This is a relatively high-tier classical pattern — rooted Day Master, transparent Killings, restrained by Eating God — structurally complete.
7. Step 6: Luck Pillars
Ren Chen female chart, born in yang year (Jia Zi) — female yang-year reverses.
Qi-yun: yang-year female chart reverses; counting back from birth date to the previous solar node (Liqiu, Aug 8) — exactly 18 days → 18÷3 = 6 years exactly → starts luck at age 6 (from 1990).
| Pillar | Age | Year | Five-Element Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xin Wei | 6–15 | 1990 | Direct Resource + Killings root |
| Geng Wu | 16–25 | 2000 | Indirect Resource + fire (favourable) |
| Ji Si | 26–35 | 2010 | Direct Officer + fire (favourable!) |
| Wu Chen | 36–45 | 2020 | Seven Killings + Killings root ← Sarah's current luck pillar |
| Ding Mao | 46–55 | 2030 | Direct Wealth + Hurting Officer ← next pillar |
| Bing Yin | 56–65 | 2040 | Indirect Wealth + Eating God |
| Yi Chou | 66–75 | 2050 | Hurting Officer + Direct Officer root |
Key observations:
- 2000–2009 (age 16–25) Geng Wu luck pillar: Indirect Resource + fire (favourable). This is the luck pillar in which Sarah migrated (2008) — Resource + favourable fire, corresponding to the energetic base-tone of smooth landing, opening of studies, and cultural adaptation in a new country.
- 2010–2019 (age 26–35) Ji Si luck pillar: Direct Officer + fire — Sarah's major favourable period. Completing studies, entering finance, and marrying (around 2015) all happened in this pillar.
- 2020–2029 (age 36–45) Wu Chen luck pillar: Seven Killings + Killings root. A period of pressure, heavy responsibility, career-burden — this is exactly where Sarah stands now (2026, age 41). The described 'mid-management plateau', 'multiple responsibilities', and 'maternal-health family responsibility' are highly consistent — typical Seven Killings pillar expression.
- The next Ding Mao luck pillar (2030–2039, age 46–55): Direct Wealth + Hurting Officer. A completely different decade — themed around creation, expression, and resource integration. Worth Sarah's attention now: this pillar will overlap with her perimenopause window (45–55), a special period of 'body–energy–identity' three-layer reorganisation.
8. Step 7: Annual Pillar Observation (2026)
2026 is Bing Wu year:
- Bing fire is a favourable element for Sarah's chart (chart lacks fire, needs bridging).
- Horse-branch fire (午) clashes the natal Rat (子) at the year pillar — year-pillar clash: often corresponds to family, ancestor, original-culture themes awakening.
- Confirmed by Sarah's mention of mother's health declining and deepening ties with the Chinese family.
- Horse-branch fire (午) has no direct clash/combination with hour branch Monkey (申).
- Bing fire transparent represents Indirect Wealth — economic opportunity windows may open this year.
9. Step 8: Integrated Reflective Guidance (御殿命理 Stance)
Based on the above, reflective guidance for Sarah (not prediction, not decision):
On career You are in the latter portion of the Wu Chen luck pillar (2020–2029). The 'Seven Killings burden' mode has accumulated significant pressure — feeling plateaued is a natural cue from chart rhythm, not a personal-capability issue. The next Ding Mao luck pillar (2030–2039) will be themed around Direct Wealth and Hurting Officer — a decade allowing you to recombine 'management experience + expressive/creative work'. From now (about 4 years before the transition), you can begin slowly fermenting directions to turn toward; how it unfolds is your choice, but chart rhythm will gradually support the turn.
On family 2026's Zi–Wu clash activates the year pillar — maternal health and transnational care responsibilities will be more salient than usual. This is not 'misfortune' but a cue that 'Resource-Star energy needs activating (your chart's Resource is weaker, but Monkey's hidden Geng can be drawn on)'. Suggest planning transnational care logistics ahead (based on your actual Shanghai setup), discussing responsibility share with your partner.
On body You are approaching perimenopause (41, in the next 5–10 years). Excess water and absent fire — this combination often corresponds to 'circulation, reproductive system, mood rhythm' mid-life themes. Establish regular GP dialogue; attend women's health screenings on schedule. BaZi is only a cue; actual bodily issues are for professional medicine.
On identity and direction Your chart's hour pillar Wu Shen — Seven Killings stacked into later life. This suggests 'you will still carry responsibility and make decisions later in life'. Together, the Ding Mao luck pillar's Output character suggests 'later-life responsibility will have a creative quality'. A question you can begin asking: 'If the 60-year-old me looks back at this moment, which preparations would she wish I had started now?'
10. How the Consultation Should Close
Our platform's consultations do not close with 'the master tells you what to do' — instead with:
- Clear boundaries: the above is a BaZi lens; it does not replace medical, legal, financial, or psychological professional judgement.
- Returning to the client: 'Of the above, what resonates with your real experience? What confuses you? What direction do you yourself see?'
- No decision urgency: major decisions can sit for 1–2 weeks after consultation.
- No created dependency: consultation is not 'periodic check-ins on your luck' but 'a single reflection at a key stage'.
11. A Note for Readers
This case is entirely fictional; any resemblance to real persons is coincidental. The article shows the flow — what a responsible BaZi consultation should include. For your own chart, every number, stem-branch, and verdict will differ, requiring a bespoke reading.
If you would like a similar-depth reading of your own chart, you are welcome to book.
