The Day Master — The Heart of the Chart
Day Stem = 'self'. Every reading begins by knowing your Day Master's nature.
What the Day Master Is
In the four-pillar chart, the heavenly stem of the day you were born is called the Day Master (also Day Stem). This character IS you — every other character in the chart acts upon, around, or for the Day Master.
Example: someone born 3 September 1986, 2pm Sydney has day pillar 庚戌 — their Day Master is 庚 (Yang Metal). Their nature: like the blade — direct, decisive, hard to bend.

The Day Master Is a Starting Point, Not Destiny
A common misconception: "I'm a 甲 wood Day Master, therefore I will ___". This treats the Day Master as deterministic.
Reality: the Day Master is your coordinate of self. The actual climate you live in depends on the whole chart — strength, season, supporting/restraining elements, the favourable element you require.
The Day Master tells you "where I begin", not "where I'll arrive". Path depends on choices and circumstances.
Same Day Master, Very Different Charts
Two people with 甲 wood Day Master, one born in spring, one in autumn — completely different charts:
- 甲 in spring: in season, strong, needs draining not support
- 甲 in autumn: weak, needs resource (印) to support
The Day Master is the house number — what's inside the house, you have to enter to see.
Next step
Read about Day Master strength — why "strong vs weak" begins with the month.
An important reminder: This is single-character imagery — it must be read against the whole chart, never relied upon as a single-stem verdict. A person's chart is the integrated interplay of all ten characters (year, month, day, hour stems and branches); the single day stem is only an entry-point coordinate.
