Favourable, Unfavourable, Hostile, Idle — The Four Categories

Beyond yongshen, each element in the chart falls into one of four categories — favourable, unfavourable, hostile, or idle.

The Four Categories

Once yongshen is identified, every other element in the chart falls into one of four categories by its relationship to yongshen:

  • Yongshen (favourable element) (用神): the most-needed element — direct rescue
  • Favourable (喜神): generates/supports yongshen — helper
  • Unfavourable (忌神): controls yongshen — harmful
  • Hostile (仇神): generates the unfavourable — indirectly harmful
  • Idle (闲神): no clear generation/control with yongshen — neutral

Example — Water Yongshen

A 丙 fire Day Master born in 午 month (peak summer), chart fire-earth dominant, water as yongshen:

  • Yongshen: 壬 / 癸 (water) — direct rescue
  • Favourable: 庚 / 辛 (metal) — metal feeds water, supports yongshen
  • Unfavourable: 戊 / 己 (earth) — earth controls water, harms yongshen
  • Hostile: 丙 / 丁 (fire) — fire feeds earth, indirectly harmful
  • Idle: 甲 / 乙 (wood) — no clear relation to water

So in dayun and annual transits:

  • Water (yongshen) → great
  • Metal (favourable) → good
  • Earth (unfavourable) → bad
  • Fire (hostile) → unfavourable
  • Wood (idle) → neutral

These Are Not Iron Rules

Above categories are directional but not absolute. Reading skill lives in detail:

  • Idle elements can sometimes rescue: in some charts, an idle element can neutralize the unfavourable
  • Unfavourable can sometimes be harmless: if the unfavourable is combined-away or controlled, its harm doesn't manifest
  • Excess yongshen is also harmful: "too much is no better than too little"

So the four categories are direction, not verdict. Final reading needs whole-chart view.

Practical Applications

Knowing your four categories, you can apply in daily life:

  • Colors: wear yongshen / favourable element's colors
    • Wood: green
    • Fire: red / purple
    • Earth: yellow / brown
    • Metal: white / silver
    • Water: black / dark blue
  • Directions: orient your office or home toward your yongshen
    • Wood: East
    • Fire: South
    • Earth: Center, SW, NE
    • Metal: West
    • Water: North
  • Industries: choose careers in the element's domain
  • Partner choice: see article on 八字合婚 — complementary charts

Do Not Over-Rely

These applications belong to feng shui adjustments and daily harmonization — they are not deterministic. Life direction lives in choice and circumstance. BaZi is reference and a mirror for reflection — not a measuring stick for decisions.
