Transformation Patterns — The Day Master Reborn

If the Day Master joins a heavenly-stem five-union and conditions are met, transformation occurs — the original nature dissolves; the transformation element becomes the chart's center.

When Union Becomes Transformation

The ten heavenly stems pair by yin/yang into five unions:

  • 甲己 → earth
  • 乙庚 → metal
  • 丙辛 → water
  • 丁壬 → wood
  • 戊癸 → fire

But UNION does not automatically mean TRANSFORMATION. In most cases, two stems form a union but each retains its original nature — called "合而不化" (united but not transformed).

Strict Conditions for True Transformation

For "真化" (true transformation):

  1. Day Master is in the union — DM must be one half of the pairing
  2. Month branch supports the transformation element — month branch is the element itself or the generator (e.g., for 甲己→土, month branch is 辰戌丑未 earth, or 巳午 fire which feeds earth)
  3. Transformation element is transparent — at least one stem of that element appears in year/month/hour heavenly position
  4. No breaking — no third stem controlling the transformation element, no strong companion breaking the union

All four met → true transformation. Any failure → 合而不化.

What True Transformation Changes

When transformation succeeds:

  • The Day Master's original element dissolves — 甲 in 甲己→土 is no longer "wood"
  • The transformation element becomes the new center — read as if Day Master were 戊 or 己 earth
  • Yongshen must be recomputed for the new chart
  • Dayun fortune completely shifts — favour earth-fire, avoid wood-water

So true transformation is a fundamental change to the chart, not a small adjustment.

"United Not Transformed" — The Bond State

The more common case: two stems join in union but don't transform:

  • Both stems keep their original elements — 甲 remains 甲, 己 remains 己
  • But they "bind" each other — both lose roughly half their functional power
  • Often appears as entanglement — emotional knots, decision paralysis, partnership friction

So 合而不化 is not nothing — it's a particular state of binding.

Jealous Union — The Triangle

A more complex case: one stem sees TWO candidate partners — called "jealous union":

  • 甲 day sees two 己 stems
  • 丙 day sees two 辛 stems

Jealous unions usually result in 合而不化 — both potential transformations stall. Astrologically often appears as "triangular relationships" or "choice paralysis".

Transformation in Dayun

Transformation patterns are not static — dayun can trigger or break transformation:

  • Natal "合而不化" but dayun supplies the missing condition → transformation occurs during that decade
  • Natal "已化" but dayun brings the breaker → transformation breaks during that decade

This is where transformation pattern reading gets exciting — moments of fundamental life-direction change.

Next step

Read about the twelve palaces — the chart's twelve life domains.

Important additional condition: Classical sources emphasise one further key condition — the Day Master cannot have a strong root. If the Day Master has a strong root in the four branches (its own qi, in season, supported by multiple branches), even if the stem-union is intact the result is 'union without transformation' (合而不化). This is a transformation prerequisite agreed upon by both Ziping Zhenquan and Diantian Sui.
